How LightSpeed Broadband’s Telegraph Poles Are Ruining Tamworth’s Streets

Tamworth’s streets are changing—and not for the better. LightSpeed Broadband’s rapid expansion has brought a wave of unsightly telegraph poles and overhead cables. These structures have altered the town’s character and skyline. While faster broadband is beneficial, many residents are unhappy with the impact on their surroundings.

The Visual Impact on Tamworth’s Streets

These tall poles disrupt Tamworth’s traditional charm. Streets that once had open views now feature industrial-looking poles and thick cables. This change makes the town feel cluttered and less inviting.

Aesthetic Concerns

  • Historical Disruption – LightSpeed Broadband’s poles contrast sharply with the town’s traditional architecture.
  • Skyline Obstruction – Many once-open streets now have views broken up by poles and wires.
  • Decreased Property Appeal – Some homeowners fear the poles will lower property values.

A Lack of Consultation and Transparency

Many residents are frustrated by the lack of communication from LightSpeed Broadband. Some homeowners woke up to find new poles outside their homes with no prior notice. Instead of using underground cables, the company chose these poles as a cost-effective option, despite community concerns.

Safety and Accessibility Issues

The poles bring practical problems beyond their appearance:

  • Obstruction on Narrow Streets – Some poles make pavements harder to navigate for wheelchair users, pedestrians, and parents with prams.
  • Potential Hazards – Above-ground cables and poles are more vulnerable to storm damage, increasing the risk of power outages and falling debris.
  • Unnecessary Clutter – In areas where underground infrastructure exists, new telegraph poles seem redundant.

What Can Be Done?

If you’re concerned about LightSpeed Broadband’s poles in Tamworth, here’s what you can do:

  1. Raise Awareness – Share photos and concerns on social media and local forums.
  2. Contact Local Authorities – Reach out to Tamworth Borough Council to express concerns.
  3. Petition for Change – A petition can pressure LightSpeed Broadband to consider underground cabling.
  4. Engage with LightSpeed Broadband – Direct feedback may encourage the company to rethink its approach.

Conclusion

Fast broadband is essential, but it shouldn’t ruin a town’s character. LightSpeed Broadband’s telegraph poles have altered Tamworth’s streets. Residents deserve a say in how their community is shaped. By voicing concerns, we can push for better infrastructure planning that balances progress with preservation.

Tamworth Borough Council say the permission was given by Staffordshire County Council but there was no consultation with residents the poles appeared – the people digging the short trenches had a plan of where the poles were going
We managed to stop 2 poles going up in our street by complaining to Lightspeed

Several of neighbours and myself have complained about the telegraph poles erected in our road. A complete eyesore. Knowone was asked before these horrible telegraph poles were erected. Spoilt the street. Absolute eyesore from outside my front window. They should never have been allowed to put them up. Thought we were moving on with the times, seems as tho we are going backwards. Surely the council could have put a stop to this or get them to take them down now!!We will see how good tamworth council are.
